Vivint Home Security and Alarm System Package, Is It Right For You?

Alexa and Google Assistant devices are directly compatible with Vivint. So, if you have an Amazon Echo, Google Home, or Nest Hub, you can probably expect it to operate with your Vivint security system.

The Z-Wave smart home protocol is also supported by Vivint. In theory, any Z-Wave device should work with Vivint, but consumer feedback suggests that this isn’t always the case. Before you toss away the packaging from a Z-Wave device that you want to integrate with your Vivint system, make sure you set it up and test it out. That way, you’ll be able to return the item if necessary.

Features of compatible devices include:

Work with Vivint on a one-on-one basis.
Use does not necessitate separate paid subscriptions.
It can be installed by you or a professional for a fee.

We believe that the majority of Vivint customers prefer to purchase smart home products directly from Vivint. After all, if you’re going to spend that much money on a security system and a smart home setup, you might as well go all out.

However, for those looking to add to their Vivint smart home, we’ve compiled a list of the best Vivint-compatible gadgets. To properly integrate your third-party items, you may need to pay for the $39.99 Vivint Smart Home plan.

The Vivint Smart Panel allows you to operate your lights, thermostats, locks, security system, and cameras, but you’ll need to add a smart speaker if you want voice control. The Amazon Echo is here to help.

You can operate your Vivint security system and smart home setup using voice commands with an Echo. You can use the Echo to set your home alarm, access video feeds on your smart hub, and adjust the temperature of your Vivint Smart Thermostat, among other things. When your hands are occupied when cooking or cleaning, it makes things a lot easier. Don’t even get us started on the joy of shutting off the lights from the comfort of your bed! Although you don’t need Amazon Prime or other Amazon premium memberships to utilize an Echo, you will need an Amazon account to get the most out of it. Despite the fact that they can’t utilize Google or YouTube, we’ve found that Echos is a little easier to use than Google Homes and Nest Hubs in past tests.

The Echo Dot is our favorite Echo. It’s not too expensive, it’s frequently on sale, it’s small and cute, and it can do all of the basic Echo duties. However, if you prefer something with greater sound or a screen, we’ve evaluated some of the most common Echo devices to help you choose.

Nest Learning Thermostat: Best smart thermostat

A smart thermostat is an excellent smart home tool. Vivint Smart Home is also compatible with the Nest Learning Thermostat, which is one of the most popular thermostats on the market.

The thermostat is Alexa-enabled, has geofencing (which means it can vary its settings depending on whether your smartphone is at home or away), is available in a variety of colors, and has more modes and settings than you can toss a stick at.

Best of all, Vivint customers may control the temperature directly from the Vivint app rather than going to the Google Home app. The smart panel can also be used to control the thermostat and other Vivint-compatible devices.

You must approve Google Nest on the Works with Vivint screen in order to utilize your Nest Learning Thermostat with Vivint. After that, you’ll connect to your Google account to grant Vivint access to your thermostat.

Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen: Best smart lock

We are not aware of any locks from our top suggestions that are compatible with Vivint. Instead, we’re recommending the Yale Assure Touchscreen smart lock as our top standalone recommendation.

This lock comes with a slew of functions that will make your life a little easier. When you approach your smartphone, it will use geofencing to unlock the door. If you don’t have access to your phone, you can use the keypad or your key. You may establish unique access codes for any visitors or guests, and the lock will even lock itself behind you if you enable the Auto-Relock feature.

You can also lock and unlock your door using the Vivint app and (once again!) the smart panel once you’re all set up with Vivint. There’s no need to download the Yale app.

The Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen requires a Wi-Fi hub to function, which is a small inconvenience but not a deal-breaker. However, we were unable to locate reliable instructions on how to connect this specific lock to your Vivint system. We recommend contacting Vivint’s customer support department.

Philips Hue Colored Smartbulb: Best smart bulb

Only Philips Hue lamps are currently compatible with Vivint smart home. Philips Hue bulbs are expensive, which is unfortunate, but they are also regarded as one of the best bulb brands available.

You may establish light routines for your day with Philips Hue, such as gradually lighting in the morning or turning off all lights at midnight. You may also utilize the geofencing tool to make distinct settings for when you’re at home and when you’re not.

If you’re going to spend a lot of money on these bulbs, we suggest getting colorful ones. Half the fun of having smart lighting is customizing colors to create the perfect atmosphere. You won’t be able to perform any of this through the Vivint app or smart panel, either.

You’ll only be able to turn the lights on and off using Vivint’s app and hub. The Philips Hue app handles the rest of the magic. You may also acquire a more affordable white light kit if you don’t think the colors are worth it without Vivint control.

Three A19 bulbs and a Hue hub are included in the set we propose (which is required for the bulbs to function correctly). Vivint recommends calling the security company’s specialists for help connecting Hue to your Vivint smart panel once you’ve set up the Hue hub.

Chamberlain MyQ: Best Extra

We recommend the Chamberlain MyQ if you’re searching for a super-useful smart home gadget that’s a little out of the ordinary yet still works with Vivint.

When your garage door opens or closes, this smart garage door sensor alerts you. For package delivery persons, in-laws, babysitters, kids, housekeepers, and significant others, it also allows you to lift and lower the door remotely. These functions are available in the MyQ app as well as the Vivint app and smart panel, and you’ll be notified if someone else uses them.

Amazon Key, on the other hand, is our favorite feature. If you use Amazon, the Chamberlain MyQ will let you use the Amazon Key feature, which allows you to have things delivered right to your garage. We know that sounds scary, but the delivery person only gets a one-time code to access the garage door through MyQ to protect your house from undesirable guests.

The only reason we didn’t give MyQ a higher rating is that it has periodically gone on the fritz and lifted the garage door on its own throughout our five-month test period. There appears to be a solution, but it will take time, so we’ve learned to keep the garage door safety latches on at night.

If you don’t purchase the Chamberlain MyQ device directly from Vivint, you may need to switch to a MyQ brand opener to make the system compliant, according to the MyQ website.

Best Vivint-compatible smart home devices in a nutshell

Amazon Echo will open doors (figuratively and maybe literally).By offering you voice control over your complete Vivint Smart Home system.

The Nest Learning Thermostat allows you to control the temperature of your home directly from the Vivint app.

You can use the Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen to lock and unlock your door while conducting other Vivint activities.

You can control the lighting in your Vivint Smart Home with the Philips Hue Colored Smart bulb.

Through Vivint, Chamberlain MyQ gives you the ability to raise and lower your garage door (and get notifications when it opens and closes).
